Our Virtual 55th Reunion Has Come and Gone |
||
June 7, 2020 - Report on ZOOM III (The Final Encounter) Last evening, on the date we were to have our BBQ with Phil and Joan Low, we held the final planned event of the Virtual 55th Reunion. Approximately 25 of us, and our teacher Joe Krause, got together via ZOOM for some lively discussion and retold stories. Cliff DeLaCroix and his excellent memory were there to remind me (and perhaps others, too) of a few of the most cringe-worthy things I/we had done so long ago. Now ZOOM is not everyone's cup of tea, and "zoom fatigue" will likely be entered into the OED right along with COVID19. However, it has been suggested that we might try to have very informal, very voluntary sessions from time to time in the future, and we will see in a couple months whether there is sufficient interest in doing so. Joe Krause commented on how much he enjoyed reading our Bios on this site, so if you have more to tell, or new experiences to recount, please send your updates to Malcolm. Speaking of Malcolm, I'd like to publicly thank him for all the energy he expended in making our virtual reunion possible, and getting us all to show up. So, until we meet again, stay safe, get involved, and wear your masks when you go out. HS (May 23, 2020) Our next (and final) virtual reunion session is happening on the evening of June 6th, starting at 8PM in the East (5PM Pacific). As with the other two sessions, admission will be by invitation only so please RSVP at RSVP@wlhs65.org. You will receive your email invitation about 30 minutes before the session start (the virtual throwing open of the doors) and you are welcome to click your link and join in as soon as you receive your invitation. Please do plan to join early if you are new to ZOOM or anticipate any issues with ZOOMing! Be on the lookout for e-mails from Malcolm with updates on our final evening. (April 27, 2020) Check out our report on the first event under the 'Virtual Events' tab. Read about the next event there too, and, if you'd like to be part of the next event, please RSVP ASAP! (April 4, 2020) The Class of '65 will plan a regular 56th reunion in West Lafayette for next year, but in 2020, we'll still get together over the Net. In the run-up to our virtual dinner at the virtual Country Club, we are going to sponsor a series of virtual events, both to warm up our skills and to help with the pandemic ennui we all face these days. The first event is Virtual Cocktail Hour that will be held as a ZOOM meeting on April 16th at 5PM EST/2PM PST.
Please RSVP to RSVP@wlhs65.org,
and your Zoom invitation will be sent to you
just before the event! Strictly BYOB!
(March 22, 2020) Besides being unable to travel, it is unsafe for any group of people to congregate, and it could be months before these restrictions will be lifted. So, it is with a great deal of sadness that the reunion team has officially POSTPONED our 55th Reunion. We hope that we will be able to have a 56th reunion in 2021. So, we have an updated class web site that we can use to catch up with one another in a Virtual Reunion. Please check out new photos and updated mini-biographies. If you haven't supplied us with your latest photos and life story, please do that now. The Reunion Planning Team has done a lot of preparation for our 55th Class Reunion, scheduled for June 5-7, 2020. Old classmates (LOL) have been contacted, if possible, and everyone has been invited to West Lafayette for this reunion. Given the busy lives many of us lead, not everyone is available, but we have a nice turnout of likely attendees planning to come from far and wide. Classmates have been contacted to provide recent photographs and short biographical sketches to help bring everyone up to speed. Everything is in place, and ready to go. If you haven't responded, or we somehow missed you, please contact us at reunionplanning@wlhs65.org with updates. |
Planned
Events We've completed all of the planned events for the virtual 55th reunion. ZOOM meetings are not for everyone, but a solid majority of those who attended seemed to enjoy chatting with old classmates, and as a special treat, our teacher Joe Krause (World History) joined the last session. Although no events are planned at the moment, it has been suggested by some that we continue to hold informal ZOOM events from time to time, maybe every few months. Who knows when, if ever, it will be reasonable to travel from far and wide to meet in WL. We will let you know on this site and by email if and when we plan any more events. Saturday, June 6th 8PM (EDT)/5PM (PDT) Virtual Reunion Dinner @ Your Device Please RSVP to RSVP@wlhs65.org Saturday, May 9th 7PM (EDT)/4PM (PDT) Virtual Appetizers @ Your Device Thursday, April 16th 5PM (EDT) Virtual Cocktail Hour @ Your Device Friday, June 5 - 6PM Dinner @ Lafayette Country Club Saturday, June 6 - 10-3 Chew and Chat Pavilion #4 Happy Hollow Park 6 PM - BBQ at Phil and Joan Low's BYOB! (April 27th)We are mostly all still staying home 24/7
due to the Pandemic, but that doesn't mean we can't get together, virtually. (March 1, 2020) We don't know what the situation will be in early June, though we all hope that the crisis will be over or substantially diminished. We will be evaluating the situation near the end of April, and conferring with you, our classmates, to determine if we should proceed, or perhaps to move the reunion to a 56th reunion in 2021. |

Here's what a few attendees had to say about the Virtual Cocktail Hour:
It was fun to see everyone, especially those that I am really not in contact with. It was great to chat with some people who I really never knew well in school! Break-out groups arranged in a sort of arbitrary fashion as they were on Thursday allow us to see and talk to people that we have not been in contact with since school, for various reasons, and I found that fun and interesting -- a real highlight. I enjoyed the time we spent together I thought the breakout groups certainly allowed for more in-depth talks with people. At this level, I was OK with random assignments into groups, since there was opportunity to get to know people who I didn't know well -- and this was as interesting as spending more time with people whom I know well. And having time for 2 subgroups increased the likelihood of having enjoyable conversations. Wonderful reunion last Thursday. It was my first immersion back with the class, and I really enjoyed it. The big group was good for me to see everyone, but the smaller groups seem to work best with Zoom for conversation. What a successful experience! I was glad to be included. I look forward to more connections in the future. The gathering was a nice beginning to what I hope will be future online gatherings/communications. The full screen line-up of faces served a uniting roll prior to the much more successful smaller group breakouts. Both venues were important, however. There is a benefit of people with a commonality being in the same room, but there is also benefit for people that didn't have many shared experiences in WLHS to connect and discover what went on in alternative universes in high school. I did enjoy the zoom meeting. It was much easier to chat in the smaller groups. I'll be there for the May 9th session and hopefully we'll have new participants. I liked the random approach for the chat groups. I thought it was great. The small groups gave us a chance to talk. It was certainly fun to see so many faces and then the breakout rooms were much better for actual conversation. Overall I thought the reunion went fine. The breakout sessions were a good idea. Timing seemed about right. I was happy to see lots of faces and hear news from people I haven't seen since high school. Looking forward to next time. Triple Thanks for the Video Visit!!! It was such fun |
